Thermal towns of the centre, relaxation and well-being

Central Portugal is full of hidden treasures… and yes, really ! Among them, its spa towns offer a unique escape dedicated to well-being and relaxation ! Here, hot springs have been bubbling for centuries, attracting visitors in search of rejuvenation, natural treatments and moments of rest. Between historical heritage, landscapes and modern facilities, these spa towns are the perfect place to reconnect with yourself. (And incidentally, to forget about emails and Zoom meetings for a while !)

A bit of history

To understand better, the history of the spa towns in central Portugal goes back to Roman times! Indeed, the Romans were well aware of the therapeutic virtues of hot water, and they clearly knew what they were doing when it came to relaxation. That’s why they built baths to enjoy the benefits of heat and minerals ! Over the centuries, these towns have managed to preserve their thermal identity while modernising their facilities. Today, they combine heritage, healthcare and wellness tourism !

Among the best-known spa towns in the Centre are Caldas da Rainha, Caldas de São Pedro do Sul, Curia, Termas de Luso and Caldas da Felgueira… Each of them has its own character, its own speciality, and a charm all its own, somewhere between a peaceful atmosphere and luxurious facilities.

The benefits of thermal waters

The thermal waters of central Portugal are rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and also bicarbonate, (and not “what”, but “who” !) known for their many virtues for the skin, joints, digestion and even blood circulation. There are even springs reputed to relieve muscle pain, improve dermatological problems or simply promote relaxation.

Thermal treatments generally include baths, thermal showers, mud or algae wraps, and relaxation or massage sessions – in short, everything you need to unwind and feel brand new! These towns have developed a medical and wellness tourism that attracts visitors from all over Portugal, but also from across Europe, seeking an experience that combines health, relaxation and beautiful scenery.

Caldas da Rainha

Caldas da Rainha is without a doubt the most iconic of the spa towns in central Portugal ! It was founded in the 15th century by Queen Leonor, to whom it owes its name… “Rainha” literally means “Queen” (a free little Portuguese lesson, by the way !). These historic baths, still in operation, offer thermal baths and traditional treatments.

Beyond its waters, Caldas da Rainha stands out for its artistic heritage : ceramic museums, artisan workshops and local markets complete the experience. We recommend a little walk through D. Carlos I Park (where you’ll find several thermal fountains). Breathe, savour the calm, or even meditate if that’s your thing!

Caldas de São Pedro do Sul

Caldas de São Pedro do Sul is one of the largest spa resorts in Portugal. Its hot springs bubble up at over 60°C and are renowned for relieving rheumatic and respiratory conditions. (Yes, 60°C is hot, but it’s good for you!)

The town offers modern facilities, with spa hotels, thermal pools and complete treatment programmes… Strolling through the magnificent thermal park, you can admire landscaped gardens, walking paths and relaxation areas, which delight families, couples or solo visitors simply looking for tranquillity. (And honestly, who doesn’t need that ?)

Curia

The Curia thermal resort is located in the heart of the central region. It’s famous for its elegant atmosphere and Belle Époque architecture. The stunning Palace Hotel da Curia offers thermal treatments, massages and personalised programmes, and a top-quality service, take our word for it !

Curia also offers a magnificent natural setting: the Curia lake, surrounded by pine trees and gardens, is perfect for walks or meditation sessions. If you enjoy golf or light sports, you’ll also find what you’re looking for here, all in an environment that combines luxury and nature. (Yes, it’s possible to sweat and stay chic at the same time.)

Luso

Luso is renowned for its naturally sparkling, bicarbonate-rich waters. In fact, you might already know the bottled water brand Luso ! This town has a thermal resort offering treatments for digestive, circulatory and muscular well-being. Luso also stands out for its proximity to the Buçaco mountain park, a magnificent place far from the urban hustle and bustle… If you’re nearby, don’t hesitate to drop by, camera in hand!

Gastronomy and relaxation

We’re in Portugal, so of course gastronomy is on the menu ! Local restaurants offer traditional, healthy and delicious cuisine. You can enjoy bacalhau à brás, regional soups, or milk and cinnamon desserts, perfect for a meal after a morning of treatments or strolls. (Careful though, the temptation to have seconds is real.)

To accompany your meal, the wines from the central region, made from local grape varieties, offer fruity and light notes ; some establishments also offer diet menus or dishes adapted to spa visitors, combining pleasure and balance!

Practical tips for visiting the spa towns

When to visit ?

The best period runs from May to October, when the weather is pleasant and the parks are in bloom (very pretty to see!). Winter is still ideal for enjoying thermal baths in complete tranquillity… imagine it : outside it’s cold, inside there’s soothing steam… pure bliss (personally, we can already picture ourselves there…).

How to get there ?

The spa towns are accessible by car (it’s the simplest way to get there). Trains and buses also serve some resorts like Caldas da Rainha or Luso. Bonus tip : the roads often cross stunning landscapes.

Accommodation

Many hotels, guesthouses and spa residences offer stays including treatments and meals. You can check their websites directly for all the information. Booking in advance is recommended during high season (especially if you’re planning a weekend trip, locals love them !).

Local transport

The spa resorts are generally compact and easy to explore on foot, but to visit the surroundings, a car can be useful! (And for cycling enthusiasts, it’s also a great way to wander around stress-free.)

Anecdotes and curiosities

The baths of Caldas da Rainha were once frequented by Portuguese nobility and 19th-century writers. People met there between two baths and two poems !

Curia is often nicknamed “the Belle Époque resort” because of its architectural style and romantic atmosphere, reminiscent of European spa towns. A little touch of old-movie charm that makes you want to stay.

Luso’s waters are naturally sparkling, and their slightly salty taste has surprised and delighted visitors for generations (definitely worth a try, even if you’re “team still water” !).

Why choose a spa town in central Portugal?

Whether you’re looking for therapeutic treatments, a wellness break or simply a moment of relaxation in a natural setting, the spa towns of central Portugal offer a unique and wonderful experience ! The tradition of ancient cures blends perfectly with modern infrastructure, historical heritage and beautiful landscapes. You’ll surely find your rhythm by enjoying the hot springs and tasting the local gastronomy.

These towns are perfect for a solo escape, a romantic getaway, or a trip with friends or family, offering the ideal balance between rest, culture and nature ! So, which town will you choose for your next relaxing getaway ? (Promise, we won’t judge if your answer is “all of them” !)
