Nazaré is a charming coastal town in Portugal, globally renowned for its giant waves crashing onto Praia do Norte… you’ve probably seen them on TV ! But beyond this impressive natural phenomenon, Nazaré offers a variety of beaches suitable for all tastes, from famous surf spots to family-friendly relaxation areas.
Praia do Norte : The Temple of Giant Waves
Located to the north of the town, Praia do Norte is the iconic spot where some of the world’s largest waves form ! This phenomenon is due to the Nazaré submarine canyon, which channels ocean swells and amplifies them as they reach the coast. Waves can exceed 30 metres in height, attracting top international surfers every year for competitions such as the Tudor Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge.
Warning : Challenging Conditions
Praia do Norte is reserved for experienced surfers ; conditions can be extremely dangerous, with powerful currents and massive waves. It is essential to follow safety instructions and not enter the water without proper surf skills.
Family-Friendly and Lively beach
In the heart of the town, Praia da Nazaré offers a calmer, more family-oriented atmosphere. With its golden sand and gentler waters, it is perfect for swimming, walking, or family activities. You’ll also find the famous colourful fishermen’s huts and stalls selling dried fish, reflecting local traditions.
Everything you need for a great time is right there : sunbed and umbrella rentals, lifeguards during the summer season, plenty of seaside restaurants and cafés, and easy access from the town center.
Serenity and Untamed Nature
A few kilometres south of Nazaré, Praia do Salgado is a wilder, less crowded beach. Surrounded by steep cliffs, it is popular with nature lovers seeking tranquillity. Surfers can also find good spots here, although conditions are variable. We went there with our loyal companion ; yes, this beach is dog-friendly !

Access and Parking
Nazaré is easily accessible by train or car from Lisbon or Porto. To reach Praia do Norte, it is recommended to park at the lot near the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, about 1km from the beach. The town is small with narrow streets and limited parking, so local shuttles, taxis, or ride-hailing services can help.
Where to Eat in Nazaré ?
Nazaré is full of restaurants offering local specialties, especially fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese dishes! Based on our experience, we recommend Restaurante O Bairro (authentic Portuguese cuisine) ; O Telheiro (specializing in seafood) ; and A Tasquinha, known for its friendly atmosphere and tasty dishes !
