The Secret Beaches of the Algarve
Discover the Algarve’s secret beaches with tips on access, tides, timings, and hidden gems away from the crowds.
The Algarve isn’t just about the famous Praia da Marinha or Praia da Rocha (though they are absolutely stunning !). If you really want to discover the region like a local; feel the salt on your skin, climb the stone steps leading to a hidden cove, hear the wind whistling around deserted cliffs; then let us guide you to the secret beaches, far from the crowds and tourist bustle. Here’s our selection, tested (of course !), approved, and explained step by step.
Why seek out secret beaches ?
Because the Algarve, off-season or along its less-trodden paths, reveals its most beautiful secrets : intimate coves, ochre cliffs, sea caves, endless stretches of sand… and sometimes a small beach bar run by a local family! People come here for the calm, the colours, the light, but also for a swim in near-private waters ; a true privilege. Fancy it ? We’re sure you do !

Praia dos Careanos (Portimão), intimate charm and fiery cliffs
Small, rocky, and incredibly photogenic, Praia dos Careanos is a peaceful alternative to the very touristy Praia da Rocha. Nestled beneath a tall cliff, with arches and little alcoves to sunbathe, it’s perfect for sun-seekers who want some solitude or for exploring caves and small natural pools at low tide. Access is via a staircase, so be prepared to carry a light bag; the beach remains relatively quiet even in summer and sometimes features a local beach bar (ideal for a snack or light lunch).
Local tip : arrive “early” (around 9:30-10:00) for the best spots; tides can affect access to some caves, so check tidal charts.
Praia da Coelha (Albufeira), a preserved mini-cove
Hidden between cliffs a few kilometres from Albufeira, Praia da Coelha (literally “Rabbit Beach”) is a little secret the locals guard closely. A small path leads down to a protected cove, with clear waters and fine sand: perfect for families with children (calm swimming) or anyone who wants to spend the day reading in peace. Even in high season, it’s far less crowded than the main Albufeira beaches.
Where to grab a drink afterwards ? Head to Albufeira’s old town for a simple, tasty grilled fish dinner; while you’re at it, enjoy the very best of the region !
Praia do Carvalho / “Pirate’s Cove” (Lagoa, Carvoeiro),
a sculpted gem
This is one of the most postcard-perfect beaches, tucked between cliffs with a natural arch near the water. Access is via a stairway (beware of some steep steps), but the reward is immediate : golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and rock formations perfect for exploring. Despite its beauty, Praia do Carvalho is quieter than neighbouring beaches, especially on weekdays or early mornings.
Tip : morning light filters through the cave, creating warm tones, perfect for photos or videos !
Praia da Amoreira (Aljezur), between river and ocean
On the western coast (Atlantic side), Amoreira is a somewhat different beach : the Aljezur river flows into it, there are dunes, grassy areas, and a long stretch of sand ! It attracts nature lovers, walkers, and those seeking a less “Mediterranean” beach. You feel far away from everything, with a landscape that looks almost otherworldly at low tide. Perfect for combining surf-watching (or surfing yourself) with relaxation.
Practical info : Praia da Amoreira is windier ; take a light jacket even in summer. Parking is free by the roadside, just a few minutes’ walk to the beach.
Praia do Beliche (Sagres), wild and spectacular
Beliche, near Sagres (Europe’s southwestern tip), is a bowl-shaped beach surrounded by towering cliffs. It’s less easy to access than some others, but the view is worth every step ! There are great waves for surfers and unforgettable sunsets, a top spot for dramatic evening photos. Access is via a staircase carved into the cliff.
Safety info : currents can be strong on west-facing beaches; respect flags and avoid swimming alone.
Praia do Barril & Ilha da Culatra (Ria Formosa, Tavira & Olhão), the “secret island”
For something different, away from cliff-lined coasts, head to the famous Ria Formosa! Praia do Barril is reached by a small tourist train crossing the lagoon ; charming and very photogenic, with the “anchor cemetery” on the beach, a remnant of tuna fishing. On the other side, Ilha da Culatra (reachable by ferry from Olhão or Faro) offers kilometres of almost uninterrupted sand and a very local island atmosphere, with fish restaurants and fishing villages. These islands are perfect havens to breathe and get lost. They are small (with a few fishermen’s cabins converted into homes or Airbnb), but incredibly pleasant, and the water is usually warm, perfect !
Tip : take the ferry from Olhão in the morning, lay down your towel, have lunch in a local “tasca”, and catch the last ferry back…that’s a perfect day !
Praia do Submarino & Praia dos Pinheiros, for adventurers
Some “secret beaches” lists include coves like Praia do Submarino (accessible only at low tide and via rocky passages) or Praia dos Pinheiros, little gems among cliffs near Lagos. These spots require effort : unmarked paths or precise low-tide timing. The reward ? Total privacy and raw nature, absolutely worth it !
Important : these “wild” beaches can be dangerous outside low tide or without proper footwear; come prepared.
How to find these beaches and the best times to visit
Transport : renting a car is the best way to explore these secret beaches. The Algarve is vast, and many secluded spots require independence. Free parking is often available off-season; in summer, early starts are essential.
Timings : early morning (8-10am) or late afternoon (from 5pm) gives soft light and fewer people.
Tides : check tide schedules, especially for coves inaccessible at high tide.
Gear : robust beach shoes for rocky paths, a light backpack, water, and a hat (always, the Algarve sun is strong!).
Safety : observe beach flags (especially on exposed west coast); avoid swimming if waves are strong.
Local addresses and beachside eateries
Each area of the Algarve has its own specialities and great spots: in Tavira/Pedras d’el Rei (Praia do Barril), head to the small family-run restaurants or stroll near the harbour ; in Olhão, take the ferry to Culatra to visit the fish market ; in Carvoeiro, enjoy the terraces behind Praia do Carvalho; in Sagres, savour fresh fish near the fortress (just past Beliche).
Local tip : In fishing villages, seek “tascas” (small local restaurants with no website, yes they still exist !), and often serve the best food !
Travel ethics, respecting secret beaches
Hidden beaches are fragile : dunes, vegetation, and bird ecosystems in Ria Formosa. Take your rubbish with you, do not pick plants, respect protected areas. During peak season, head east (Tavira, Ilha) to avoid crowds, sharing the coast with thousands of tourists is never as pleasant !
Suggested two-day “off the beaten path” itinerary
Day 1 : morning at Praia do Carvalho (quiet at sunrise), lunch in Carvoeiro, afternoon/late afternoon at Praia dos Careanos.
Day 2 : cross to Ria Formosa (Praia do Barril + Ilha da Culatra), lunch in Olhão, late afternoon at Praia da Coelha or Beliche depending on whether you prefer east or west.
