The Paradise of Greens, Golf in the Algarve

When people think of the Algarve, golden beaches and endless sunshine usually come to mind (or retirees, take your pick !). But if you're into golf, you'll probably think of its world-renowned courses! The Algarve is a top destination for golf lovers: with its mild climate, high-end facilities, diverse landscapes and stunning natural surroundings, it has everything to win you over. Let’s take a full tour of the region’s most iconic courses, their unique features, nearby dining spots, and practical tips to make the most of your “golf and sunshine” adventure...

Why is the Algarve a golfer’s dream?

The region boasts over 30 championship courses spread across the southern coast, inland areas and the western Algarve. That means: a favourable climate (plenty of sunshine, little frost); varied scenery (pine trees, seaside, lagoons, dunes); and professional infrastructure (green-fee bookings, quality equipment). In short, whether you're a beginner or seasoned golfer, the Algarve lets you combine “lifestyle” and “playtime”, the perfect combo!

Unmissable courses with character

Here’s our selection of some of the most renowned courses, each with its own personality.

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club (Castro Marim) Designed by American legend Jack Nicklaus, this course is often ranked as the best in Portugal. Located inland in the eastern Algarve, it’s peaceful and ultra-premium. Signature features: wide yet strategic fairways, deep bunkers, and immaculate greens.

Quinta do Lago South (Almancil) A southern classic, host of the Portuguese Open several times. Signature features: resort-style layout in a well-developed estate, very popular among travelling golfers.

Old Course Vilamoura (Vilamoura)
One of the oldest and most iconic courses in the Algarve. Signature features: classic golf atmosphere, shaded pine trees, close to the marina and local life, ideal for families !

San Lorenzo Golf Course (Quinta do Lago)
Set right next to the stunning Ria Formosa nature reserve. Signature features : a mix of dunes, pine trees and water features, very “natural” and scenic.

Benamor Golf Course (Tavira)
Less “ultra-luxurious” but loved for its charm and great value. Signature features : lovely views of the Atlantic and nearby hills, relaxed atmosphere.

Other great picks worth knowing

Espiche Golf Course: 18 holes in a very natural setting (west coast).

Salgados Golf Course: 18 holes behind Praia de Galé, flatter terrain — great for a “recovery day”.

Laranjal Golf Course: located in Quinta do Lago, modern and already highly rated.

Where to eat after your round

After 18 holes, the pleasure continues: local cuisine, relaxing settings — perfect for a post-game debrief ! If you're near Lagos, we recommend Mirandus Restaurant at Vivenda Miranda Boutique Hotel for refined Mediterranean dishes. If you're in Vilamoura, head towards the marina for great options.

Tip : Book your table in advance and aim for a late lunch or early dinner to avoid the crowds.

Practical tips for planning your golf trip

Booking green-fees
Most courses offer online booking with real-time availability. Low season means better prices; in high season, plan ahead.

Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are ideal: mild weather, beautiful light, fewer crowds. Summer is glorious but expect higher prices and occasional water restrictions.

Equipment & skill level
Even though some courses are “resort-friendly”, having a basic level improves the experience. Take breaks in the shade and stay hydrated, Algarve sunshine is no joke !

Transport & accommodation
Faro Airport is the main gateway, but having a car is highly recommended. If you're staying near a golf resort, choose accommodation with quick access to the course. You can even combine a “golf villa” with multiple rounds!

Thinking long-term ?

If you're considering relocating and you're a golfer, the Algarve is a fantastic option ! There’s already a well-established international community ; you’ll enjoy a lifestyle that blends sport, nature and culture. Plus, the region offers plenty of leisure activities beyond golf ; beaches, hiking, gastronomy, and heritage.

Golf in the Algarve is more than a hobby, it’s a way of life ! Sunlit fairways, the sea nearby, ever-changing landscapes… Whether you're a passionate golfer or a curious beginner, whether you're planning a holiday or a move, this region has everything to charm you. Among the pristine greens, choose your shots, savour the moments, and enjoy the Algarve’s gentle rhythm.
