Working in Portugal : the sectors hiring in 2025

You’ve thought about it “what if I moved somewhere sunny, worked from a terrace, and forgot about traffic jams for good ?” (Let’s be honest, that thought has crossed everyone’s mind at least once !) Well, good news : Portugal’s job market is buzzing this year ! If you’re thinking about moving here or simply fancy a change of scenery, here’s a look at the sectors hiring in 2025 and where you might need to grab your laptop (or your safety boots, your call).

Why now’s the right time ?

Before we dive into the details, a bit of context : Portugal’s employment rate reached around 72.4 % in 2023. The country is keen to attract talent, boost its tech industry, expand exports, and strengthen its green transition. The result ? Several sectors are booming !

Tech & digital (yep, time to flex those keyboard shortcuts)

No surprise here, tech is everywhere ! According to the latest data, demand for tech professionals in Portugal is expected to rise by about 15–25 % in 2025.

Examples of hot roles : full-stack developer, AI specialist, cloud architect, cybersecurity expert. Top skills in demand : Python, SQL, JavaScript, AWS, machine learning (I’ll admit, that’s all Greek to me, but the pros will get it).

Why it matters for you ? Plenty of jobs are in English (and some in French too), remote work is often possible, and the cities are great bases to live in.

Tourism, hospitality & seasonal work

Portugal remains one of Europe’s most beloved holiday destinations, so naturally : hotels, restaurants and travel services are hiring. In 2025, expect both seasonal contracts and long-term opportunities in major chains and resorts. Bonus point : English + another language = gold star (so if you speak French, that’s a real advantage !).

Small warning though : these jobs can be seasonal, hours flexible… and that ocean view doesn’t always make up for working on a Sunday morning.

Renewable energy & green transition

Want to work in a field that actually matters ? Portugal is investing heavily in green energy solar, wind, sustainable renovation, and mobility.

Why it’s worth watching ? Government support + EU funds + a strong demand for skilled professionals.

Ideal profile : energy engineer, maintenance technician, sustainability consultant.

Healthcare, caregiving & paramedical professions

With an ageing population and a drive to strengthen its healthcare system, Portugal is seeing a real demand in this sector. Some of the most sought-after roles : nurses, caregivers, physiotherapists, multilingual staff for international clinics.

The little bonus : working in a sunny country where “well-being” isn’t just a buzzword.

BPO, shared service centres & back-office roles

For those who prefer working “behind the scenes” but still making a real impact : Portugal is a major hub for shared services, multilingual call centres, and international back-offices (yes, lots of them and that’s actually how many expats start their Portuguese journey).

Perk : English or French is often enough, ideal for international customer service profiles.

Worth knowing : salaries may not match those of an AI engineer, but it’s a great stepping stone into an international environment.

A few practical tips to get started

  • Adapt your CV to an international format + highlight your language skills.
  • English and/or French are often enough, but learning a bit of Portuguese + shows commitment
  • Think about location : Lisbon and Porto are still the main hubs, but other cities are on the rise.
  • Don’t wait for everything to be perfect before applying : “remote from Portugal” is a real option for many.
  • Be flexible about your starting salary, what matters is getting your foot in the door.
  • Check legal requirements if you’re moving from abroad (visa, work permit, etc.).

Working in Portugal in 2025 isn’t an unreachable dream !

With the right profile, it can truly be a life-changer : sun, a slower pace, and yes, serious work too. Sure, you might end up working “under a palm tree” (okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit), but really, it’s about combining career and quality of life.

So, ready to send your CV from a Lisbon café terrace ?
