But Nazaré isn’t just about adrenaline and perfect barrels. It’s also a mosaic of beaches to suit every taste: from the legendary surf spot to those perfect corners to chill with the family, feet in the sand and eyes on the horizon.

The Temple of Giant Waves

Located to the north of town, Praia do Norte is the emblematic spot where the world’s most impressive waves are born. This phenomenon is caused by a unique underwater canyon off Nazaré, which channels the ocean swell and amplifies it as it reaches the coast. Result? Towering walls of water, sometimes higher than a ten-story building!

Waves can exceed 30 meters in height, attracting the best surfers on the planet every year for competitions such as the Tudor Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge.

Attention: Difficult Conditions

Praia do Norte is not a playground for everyone. It is reserved for experienced surfers. In fact, conditions can be extremely dangerous, with strong currents and massive waves. Definitely not the place to test your new inflatable board.

It’s essential to follow safety guidelines and not venture into the water without solid surfing skills.

Family-Friendly and Lively Beach

In the heart of town, Praia da Nazaré offers a calmer, more family-oriented atmosphere. With its golden sand and gentler waters. It’s ideal for swimming, strolling, or enjoying family activities…

You’ll also find the famous colorful fishermen’s huts and stalls of dried fish, a testament to the town’s local traditions. A real living postcard!

Activities and Amenities

You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas. Perfect for a post-seafood nap. That’s great! Lifeguards are always on duty during the summer season, which is reassuring.

Seafront restaurants and cafés are plentiful! It’s impossible to leave hungry. Enjoy yourself! And to top it all off, the beach is easy to access.

Praia do Salgado

Serenity and Wild Nature

A few kilometers south of Nazaré, Praia do Salgado is a wilder, less crowded beach. It’s surrounded by steep cliffs and is popular with those who appreciate nature and tranquility… Here, there’s no beach music or crowds, just the sound of the waves and the cry of the seagulls.

Surfers can also find good breaks, although conditions vary.

Dog-Friendly Beach

Praia do Salgado is also known for being “dog-friendly”, offering a space where pets can run freely. Yes, your four-legged friend is welcome here!

Access and Parking

Access to Nazaré is easy from Lisbon or Porto, by train or by car. To reach Praia do Norte, it’s recommended to park near the São Miguel Arcanjo Fort, about 1 km from the beach.

In fact, the town is small, full of charm but with narrow streets and few parking spots.

Local shuttles or taxis/VTCs can make getting to the beach easier.

Where to Eat in Nazaré?

Nazaré is full of restaurants serving local specialties, including fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese dishes! Let’s just say food lovers will be delighted.

Among the many establishments, we recommend Restaurante O Bairro for authentic Portuguese cuisine. But also O Telheiro, famous for its seafood, and A Tasquinha, with a friendly atmosphere and delicious dishes!

Good to Know

The best time to visit is spring (or autumn), which offer pleasant weather. There will be fewer tourists and that’s something your wallet will appreciate, let’s be honest.

As for getting there, Nazaré is easily accessible by train from Lisbon or Porto, or by car (about 1h30 from Porto).

When it comes to accommodation, there are plenty of hotels and guesthouses available, offering a range of options for every budget!

A friendly tip: it’s best to book in advance, because the town fills up quickly.
