Volcanic lakes of São Miguel

Volcanic lakes of São Miguel

Discover São Miguel’s volcanic lakes : hiking, photography, and tranquil nature in the heart of the Azores.

The island of São Miguel, in the Azores, is renowned for its spectacular volcanic landscapes and breathtaking panoramas! Among its natural treasures, the volcanic lakes hold a special place: they embody the serene power of nature, offering visitors a stunning display of colours and tranquillity, as well as unique experiences in hiking, contemplation, and discovery… a complete journey ! These lakes are a must-visit to fully understand the geology and beauty of São Miguel.

An Exceptional Geological History

The lakes of São Miguel are the result of millennia of volcanic activity. The island was formed by successive eruptions in the middle of the Atlantic. The volcanic lakes themselves formed in craters or depressions created by the collapse of magma chambers or volcanic explosions, commonly known as calderas.

Each lake tells its own story: from the emerald waters of Sete Cidades to the crystal-clear, wild waters of Lagoa do Fogo, every site is a living testament to the Earth’s power. Volcanic rocks, hot springs, and lush vegetation surrounding the lakes make these locations exceptional, almost magical, both for their geology and biodiversity.

Must-See Lakes

Sete Cidades, The Twin Lakes

You have probably heard of Sete Cidades, the most famous lake in the Azores! It is actually two twin lakes: Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul, separated by a narrow strip of land. Their legend is quite romantic: it tells the story of a forbidden love between a princess and a shepherd, which supposedly gave the lakes their colours (poetic, isn’t it ?).

The Miradouro da Vista do Rei offers a spectacular panoramic view of the two lakes and the surrounding caldera (get your camera ready !). Hikers can explore trails around the crater to see the lakes from different angles. You can also enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, or pedal boating on the calm waters, a serene way to experience nature.

Lagoa do Fogo, The Lake of Fire

Less crowded but equally impressive, Lagoa do Fogo is a crater lake located in the centre of the island, over 500 metres above sea level. Its name comes from the intensity of the water’s colour, as well as from past eruptions that shaped the basin.

The lake is surrounded by a beautiful nature reserve, with trails leading down to the water’s edge and offering breathtaking views.

Lagoa das Furnas, Water, Steam, and Earth

The Furnas lake is famous for its geothermal activity. Fumaroles and hot springs dot the area, and locals use this natural heat to cook the Cozido das Furnas, a stew of meat and vegetables slow-cooked underground with volcanic steam. You can try it at restaurants such as Restaurante Caldeiras & Vulcões, Restaurante do Terra Nostra Hotel Garden, or Restaurante Tony’s.

Visitors can stroll around the lake, admire nearby botanical gardens, and observe the unique geothermal phenomena. The calm waters and surrounding mountains create a peaceful, photogenic setting, perfect for a relaxing day.

Lagoa do Congro and Lagoa de São Brás, Hidden Gems

For those seeking more intimate, less touristy experiences, Lagoa do Congro and Lagoa de São Brás also offer a tranquil refuge. Surrounded by forests and volcanic valleys, these lakes are perfect for a nature walk, lakeside meditation, or simply enjoying the peace away from the crowds.

Activities Around the Lakes

Hiking and Wildlife Observation

São Miguel is a true paradise for hikers ! Trails around the lakes offer exceptional panoramas and spectacular viewpoints over volcanoes, valleys, and the Atlantic Ocean. Walks can last a few hours or a full day, and some trails even allow for picnics in stunning natural settings.

Photography and Contemplation

Each lake presents a unique interplay of colours and reflections depending on the weather, time, and light. Amateur or professional photographers will find extraordinary opportunities here, leaving with truly unique shots.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Lakes

Best time to visit : May to September, when the weather is pleasant and days are sunnier. Winter is quieter, but some roads may be slippery due to rain.

How to get there : renting a car in Ponta Delgada is the best way to explore the lakes independently. Guided tours are also available.

Equipment : hiking shoes, comfortable clothing, and a windbreaker are recommended, along with water and picnic supplies for longer walks.

Environmental respect : stay on marked trails, take your litter with you, and respect local wildlife and flora.

Why These Lakes Are Worth Visiting ?

The volcanic lakes of São Miguel are more than just stunning viewpoints : they offer a full immersion into the nature, geology, and culture of the Azores. They provide a unique combination of relaxation, hiking, photography, and culinary discovery. Each lake has its own character and tells a part of the island’s story, between volcanoes, legends, and biodiversity.

Whether travelling solo, as a couple, or with family, these lakes guarantee timeless moments, a chance to disconnect, and the opportunity to reconnect with nature.
