In Portugal, canned fish embodies a true culinary tradition, an artisanal savoir-faire, and a way to elevate everyday meals. Sardines, tuna, mackerel, clams, and even octopus, each tin tells the story of fishermen, Portugal’s Atlantic coastlines, and the nation’s deep passion for the sea. And if you still think canned fish is just for lazy nights or quick fixes… think again ! You believe cans are only good for picnics or emergencies? Discover them in a new light : as a gourmet art, a simple way to transform your meals and taste Portuguese excellence, right at home. A single tin that sometimes hides more craftsmanship than a fine-dining dinner, that’s the Portuguese magic !
A bit of history
Canning production in Portugal dates back to the 19th century. With the rise of the fishing industry, sardines in tins (now iconic) allowed many families to settle along the Atlantic coast. Techniques have been passed down from generation to generation, and some canneries still active today blend traditional methods with modern practices.
The secret to quality lies in the choice of fish, the freshness of the ingredients, and the care given to every step of the process. The fish are generally caught sustainably, prepared by hand, and cooked in a variety of recipes: in olive oil, tomato sauce, with chili, white wine, or aromatic herbs. There’s something for everyone! The secret? A clever mix of olive oil, patience… and love for the open sea.

Each region offers its own recipes : in Lisbon, you’ll find sardines in olive oil flavored with bay leaf; on the northern coast, tuna is often prepared naturally or in artisanal tomato sauce ; and in the Algarve, it’s the smoked mackerel and sardines that win over the finest palates. A real tour of Portugal… in a can !
